Peace and Understanding

Earlier today I was annoyed because we don't have meetings and orientations. However, I got a call from Injy our awesome YFU volunteer. Me and Lamiaa -the other exchange student- had a meeting. We talked about promoting peace and understanding and how great the idea of Exchange is. We are small ambassadors. We are expected to give in a presentation about our country. We also have to be aware of every move, every decision and every act. And yet enjoy every moment of our exchange. Every time we meet I get the keywords. Respect, Tolerance, Patience...etc And in order to have a successful experience you have to apply the keywords.

MAN, I AM BUSY

Only twenty two/one days left, however, I don't feel like it. YFU Egypt are being so slow. We had one camp a month ago and nothing since then, no other meetings or orientations. Although, I had my visa interview like two weeks ago, I still haven't got my visa. But I got my flight information! I am counting days till August 19.

Our German classes at the Goethe Institute have ended. And now I start my personal Egyptian school study. I have twenty one days to study a full year syllabus. As that's not logical I'll have to take some books to study abroad too. Well, that's in order to not have to redo the school year I will have missed. And here lies my fear. I am horrible at self control. I am awfully lazy. But still I don't want to have an extra year as my class graduates. Because in order to go to college in Egypt I have to attend the three years of secondary/high school. As I am going to spend one year abroad. There will be one year missed. I have two possibilities whether to study this year in Germany and come take the exams and pass or have the full year when I come back. Both have advantages and disadvantages. We'll see what'll happen. God Bless.

An Email from Host Mother

Excitement has a different definition.

My host mother finally sent us an email. She sounded nice but used hard German words like tatsächlich. She says I'll spend my first school day with 8th graders with my host sister until the school decides at which grade will I be. I hope I go to the 10th.

I am having a hard time deciding what phone I should take with me, or should I buy one from there? Unfortunately I don't know much about the cell phone systems, contracts or so in Germany.

My family as every exchange student's family are being somehow emotional, especially my mother.

My host brother is going to the US near Baltimore. He's leaving on the 1st of August. Four days from now. It would be very nice sharing our exchange experiences since I'll be living with his family.

Thirty Days Left

I officially have 30 days left to go.

30 days to say goodbye, to pack, to get excited, to have my last laughs and cries of the year. I have 30 days left to meeting my host family, to making new friends, new experiences, new places in my heart. 30 days left to smelling another air. Too much drama? maybe...

I am a bit calm about it. Having many emotions; fear, enthusiasm, happiness, worry, love? What mostly annoys me is that the year I am going to miss in my Egyptian school must be attended again meaning my friends may graduate before me. But I shall work to prevent that. No pain no gain.

The Very Beginning

Hi There!

Today I am going to tell you about my journey that started since I got accepted as an exchange student from Egypt to Germany.
Last school year I applied for a scholarship to Germany with Youth For Understanding (YFU) Germany http://www.yfu.de/ and Goethe Institute http://www.goethe.de/enindex.htm and PASCH Schulen as partner organizations. Youth Exchange programs are mainly to promote peace and understanding among countries. It allows young people to expand their horizons, see new things, change stereotypes, gain experiences, have fun and spend some time away from home.
In my case it will be a school year in Germany. I will be living with a German family, attending a secondary school (Gymnasium) and having an everyday typical German life for a year.

Acceptance Email

We're two students from Egypt going with YFU. We already had an orientation seminar. We went through all the preparations as the interview, essays and letters.  And about two weeks ago I was, to my excitement, sent information about my host family. The Zimmermanns. Mr and Mrs Zimmermann, S, H and a dog named Winni. Schwerin, the Capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will be my place of residence. I have already contacted my host sister. She is very nice.

Last Sunday I went to the embassy for the visa as for yesterday I got my ticket and flight info (yet haven't got my visa). And to my surprise I found that another girl from Egypt is going with us..!
